X01 (501, 301) darts rules explained

X01 is the darts game the professionals play on TV: everyone starts with the same score, usually 501, and throws it down to exactly 0. Whoever gets there first wins the leg.

  • Starting score 301, 501, 701 or 901
  • 3 darts per visit
  • Usually finished on a double (double out)

How to play

  1. Everyone starts with the same score: 501 is standard, 301 is quicker, 701 and 901 take longer.
  2. Each visit is 3 darts and the total is taken off the remaining score. A single counts once, a double twice, a triple three times, the outer bull 25 and the bull 50.
  3. Whoever reaches exactly 0 first wins the leg. With double out the last dart must be a double or the bull - a remaining score of 1 can then no longer be checked out.
  4. Bust: going below 0 - with double out also to 1, or to 0 without a double - puts you back to the score before the visit, and the next player is up.
  5. A match is one leg or several, for example “best of 5” (first to 3 legs). With sets, the first to the required legs wins the set, and the first to the required sets wins the match.

Variants

  • Double out (standard): the last dart must be a double or the bull. Without it single out applies - any dart may finish the leg.
  • Double in: points only count from the first double or bull.
  • Switch to single out: after 10 to 30 rounds single out applies, so a leg does not drag on forever.
  • Round limit: after 15 to 40 rounds without a checkout the lowest remaining score wins; on a tie only the tied players keep throwing.

Which route for which score? Every finish from 170 to 2 is in the checkout chart.

X01 (501, 301) example

In 501 Anna throws T20, T20 and T20 - a 180, leaving 321. A few visits later she is on 40 and hits D20: leg won. Had she hit a 20 first on 40 (leaving 20) and then D20 (40 points), she would have bust and be back on 40.

X01 (501, 301) tips

  • Leave yourself a score you can finish on a double - 32 (D16) and 40 (D20) are ideal. After hitting a 16, D16 still leaves D8, then D4.
  • If the T20 is blocked, switch to the T19 - it scores almost as much.
  • Learn the key checkouts by heart; every route is in the checkout chart.
