Shanghai darts rules explained
In Shanghai every round has its own number: round 1 the 1, round 2 the 2 and so on. The highest score at the end wins - unless someone throws a “Shanghai” first.
- 7 or 20 rounds
- Only one number counts per round
- Shanghai = instant win
How to play
- In round 1 only the 1 counts, in round 2 only the 2 and so on. Other numbers score nothing.
- Points = number × multiplier, for example triple 5 in round 5 = 15 points.
- Hitting the single, double and triple of the round’s number in one visit is a “Shanghai” and wins immediately.
- Otherwise the highest score after the last round wins. On a tie only the leaders keep throwing: a bull shoot-out, round by round.
Variants
- Rounds: 7 rounds (1 to 7, quick) or 20 rounds (1 to 20).
Shanghai example
Round 3: Anna hits 3, D3 and T3 - a Shanghai, she wins on the spot whatever the score. Without the Shanghai the visit would have scored 3 + 6 + 9 = 18 points.
Shanghai tips
- Hit safely: every hit on the round’s number counts, misses score nothing.
- If you are well behind, it is worth going for a Shanghai.
- With 7 rounds Shanghai is quick to play - good as a warm-up.
Shanghai FAQ
Does a Shanghai have to be in a particular order?
No, single, double and triple just have to be hit in the same visit - the order doesn’t matter.
What happens on a tie?
Only the leaders keep throwing, round by round at the bull, until one is ahead.
